I like to go to the website Worldometers for my covid information on cases in the USA, deaths, etc. Since looking at the webpage on and off for the last year or so, I always found the Florida numbers REALLY confusing. For instance, all this month, every day, Florida has had either 0, 2 or 3 daily deaths reported. Since Florida is one of the biggest “hotspots” of coronavirus, why is the death rate listed every day so low?
So I did a little calculating. On October 1, 2021 there were 55,011 total deaths in Florida, that day there were 2 deaths. In fact, from October 1 until today, there is a reported whopping 24 daily deaths in Florida over half a month. Gee — maybe I should move there, the death rate is really, really low. Maybe the doctors and nurses just know how to cure coronavirus, or perhaps if you get it, just go to a hospital in Florida and get cured.
BUT — then I looked at the total deaths from October 1- October 15 and a strange thing occurs. If you add the 55,011 total deaths on October 1 plus the 24 daily deaths from that same time period, you should end up with 55,035 total deaths as of today…. So — why does the total deaths on October 15 say 57,711? That is a total death tally of 2700 for half a month. How are they reporting 2676 more deaths than the daily total.
So I looked into this a little further and found out The Miami Herald has already done a story on this:
On Monday, Florida death data would have shown an average of 262 daily deaths reported to the CDC over the previous week had the health department used its former reporting system, the Herald analysis showed. Instead, the Monday update from Florida showed just 46 “new deaths” per day over the previous seven days.
It seems the State of Florida is reporting very few deaths on a daily basis and then “dumping data” for deaths for a week ago. For example they may show 2 or 3 deaths on a certain day, but the “total” deaths from that day skyrocket up to 800 or so deaths. They do these “dumps” about twice each week.
